DB Schenker creates additional logistics capacity for solar industry

Dedicated 4,900 square meter warehouse for Chinese customers in Mechelen

(Antwerp, 26 July, 2011)
In order to fulfil the distribution requirements of Chinese solar panel manufacturers, Schenker NV has expanded its logistics capacity with additional capacity in the Mechelen Noord industrial park. The new facility was fully occupied from day one.

“We have been providing solar panel logistics for some time,” explains Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director of Schenker NV. “Originally, we were storing components for solar panels manufactured in Europe that were then finished in China. In Belgium we are offering an additional service to this vertikal market: the distribution of finished products throughout Europe. A number of Chinese clients were keen to start using the new service immediately and this is why we decided to create additional logistics capacity.”

The branch in Mechelen has more than 26,900 square meters of warehouse space, of which 9,000 square meters is for cross-dock activities. Schenker NV leases 4,900 square meters from Montea, at the industrial park in Mechelen. The site is in a top location alongside the E19 Brussels-Antwerp motorway. The warehouse was recently renovated and is equipped with own solar panels. This additional capacity means Schenker NV's logistics capacity in Mechelen has now increased to 22,800 square meters.

“A major advantage is that we offer VAT deferment through fiscal representation for our clients,” continues Ulrich Pütz. “We will fulfil all Belgian customs requirements on the client's behalf and transfer VAT liability from Belgium to the country where the customer sells the modules. For the client, this means a significantly reduced cash flow.” The Montea warehouse was recently full accredited as a bonded warehouse and, consequently, can now provide space for both goods that are under customs supervision and those that are not. As an integrated logistics provider, Schenker NV will take on responsibility for the transport of solar panels from North European ports to the distribution centre in Mechelen. Added value activities are offered at the centre, such as re-packaging, re-labelling, quality control and return logistics. Goods can be delivered directly to the client from Mechelen on demand.

Schenker NV is the Belgian branch of DB Schenker Logistics and employs 525 people at six sites: Antwerp (corporate office and ocean freight activities), Brucargo (air freight activities), Mechelen (land transport activities), Waregem (land transport, air freight and ocean freight activities), Willebroek (contract logistics and supply chain management) and Zeebrugge (ocean freight activities).
