First palliative service in Romania thanks to DB Schenker Logistics

Promoting social responsibility • an important pillar of sustainability

(Antwerpen, October 26, 2011)
Last week, two completely full-loaded DB Schenker trucks with equipment from the old retirement home in Geraardsbergen drove from Mechelen to Ciacova (Romania). The goods will be used to set up a palliative care service, hitherto non-existent in Romania. Schenker NV provided the transportation including loading and unloading, free of cost.

Thirty-nine beds and mattresses, 41 hospital cabinets, 46 wardrobes, one lift chair, a stretcher and three pallets loaded with bathroom and bed linen were loaded in trucks in Geraardsbergen and transported to Ciacova via the Schenker NV warehouse in Mechelen. Romanian and Belgian volunteers are working hard to renovate the old hospital so that a palliative care and aftercare service for cancer patients can be set up. This first, much needed palliative care service in Romania will be headed by a Romanian oncologist and a Professor at the University of Timisoara.

The charity campaign is a joint initiative of F7, an organisation of seven socially committed businesswomen from Antwerp, ADR-Vlaanderen (Actiedorpen Roemenië - Romanian Villages Campaign), Patrick Van Overloop (Actiegroep Moerbeke helpt Vârtop - Action Group Moerbeke helps Vârtop) and the OCMW of Geraardsbergen.

“When Group F7 came by, we did not hesitate even a second to offer free transportation,“ stresses Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director. “Furthermore: our staff organised a massive drive to collect three pallets full of bed and bathroom linen.”

Schenker NV is the Belgian branch of DB Schenker Logistics and employs 655 staff at seven sites: Antwerp (corporate office and ocean freight activities), Brucargo (air freight), Eupen (land transport and logistics), Mechelen (land transport), Waregem (land transport and air freight), Willebroek (contract logistics and supply chain management) and Zeebrugge (ocean freight).
