New co-packaging area in Willebroek creates added value

A new 2,500 square meter mezzanine floor exclusively dedicated to co-packaging has made a significant investment in added value for our FMCG customers.

With the commissioning of a new 2,500 square meter mezzanine floor exclusively dedicated to co-packaging in its state-of-the-art FMCG warehouse in Willebroek, Schenker nv, the DB Schenker Logistics arm in Belgium, has made a significant investment in added value for its customers in the field of Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG).

“More and more customers are requiring all co-packing activities to be carried out on-site by their logistics services provider,” explains Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director of Schenker nv, Belgium. “This enables them to work with one single contact and cut CO2 emissions as well as administration and transport costs. Most importantly, it makes logistics processes much more flexible. Now we are able to respond to our customers' needs for promotional activities much faster than before.”

In the past, individual co-packaging assignments had been performed in various corners of the warehouse. “With our new mezzanine floor, we can offer our customers best-in-class co-packaging services and excellent working conditions for up to 100 employees,” states Monique Van Hoof, Business Unit Director Logistics at Schenker nv in Willebroek.

The new co-packaging area boasts three levels: the basement contains machinery, e.g. for shrinking, the second floor is dedicated to manual work, display construction and repackaging, and the third floor offers a break room, dressing room, toilets and a canteen exclusively for the co-packaging workers. “All co-packaging activities are performed by disabled people from a sheltered workshop with years of expertise,” says Geert Vanderoy, Branch Manager at Schenker nv in Willebroek. “The workers are really proud of their new workplace.”

The co-packaging activities mainly involve combining two or more products for special promotions, for example two packs of coffee or cookies with a sample of a new variety. Long-term customer Nestlé has a large part of its products co-packed in this area. Sofie Hofman, Head of Supply Chain Operations Belgilux at Nestlé: “With the construction of the mezzanine, DB Schenker is demonstrating its readiness to invest in long-term partnerships with its customers. Besides the major reduction of its carbon footprint, in-house co-packing gives Nestlé the advantage of anticipating the increasing demand for flexibility and availability even better.”

DB Schenker’s state-of-the-art FMCG warehouse is located in Willebroek on the Brussels-Antwerp axis. It covers 93,000 square meters and has a storage capacity of 93,000 pallets in five different temperature zones ranging from -22°C to +18°C and ambient temperature.

Based in Antwerp, Schenker nv is one of the Belgian market’s leading integrated logistics service providers and employs 680 staff at eight branches: Antwerp, Brussels, Eupen, Mechelen, Zwevegem, Willebroek, Zaventem and Zeebrugge. DB Schenker Logistics supports industry and trade in the global exchange of goods combining Land Transport, Air and Ocean Freight, Contract Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
