Schenker nv, DB Schenker’s logistics branch in Belgium, made substantial investments in a new auto-unloading zone and auto-pilot when upgrading their Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) warehouse in Willebroek, near Antwerp. “Thanks to this innovation, we are now able to offer our FMCG customers an efficient 24/7 unloading service, even at night and on weekends,” states Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director of Schenker nv, Belgium. “This is one major reason why the Kellogg company entrusted us with the logistics for their new Pringles brand earlier this year.”
The investments in the new logistics services include an auto-unloading machine, an auto pilot vehicle and equipment for six trucks – three owned by Schenker nv and three by Kellogg – with special trailers. At present, they are only used for the Pringles business. When trucks arrive from the Kellogg production site just twelve kilometers away at night or during the weekends, they head for the special gateway where the auto-unloading machine has been installed. As soon as the truck driver presses a button, the door to the gateway opens and the truck is unloaded within a few minutes. From here, the auto-pilot takes the pallets to a designated area. Each morning there are ten truck loads waiting for Schenker nv employees to store them for further distribution.
“Our new auto-unloading zone has put us at the cutting edge of technology and is saving time and costs,” states Monique Van Hoof, Business Unit Director Logistics at Schenker nv in Willebroek.
DB Schenker’s state-of-the-art FMCG warehouse is located in Willebroek on the Brussels-Antwerp axis. It covers 93,000 square meters and has a storage capacity of 93,000 pallets in five different temperature zones ranging from -22°C to +18°C and ambient temperature.
Based in Antwerp, Schenker nv is one of the Belgian market’s leading integrated logistics service providers and employs 680 staff at eight branches: Antwerp, Brussels, Eupen, Mechelen, Zwevegem, Willebroek, Zaventem and Zeebrugge. DB Schenker Logistics supports industry and trade in the global exchange of goods combining Land Transport, Air and Ocean Freight, Contract Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
