Multi-customer facility supporting FMCG supply chains

Multi-customer facility Willebroek supporting more flexible and economical FMCG supply chains

(Antwerp/Willebroek, May 21, 2014)
A In order to handle the complex supply chains of their customers in the Fast Moving Consumer Goods business (FMCG) more flexibly and economically, Schenker nv has designed its FMCG warehouse in Willebroek as a multi-customer facility. This concept allows different customers to share the human resources and infrastructure of one logistics center. “This means a benefit for customers with fluctuating capacity utilization,” states Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director of Schenker nv. “It’s much more efficient than operating their own or dedicated warehouse.”

Over the last year, DB Schenker has invested substantially in several innovations at the Willebroek site, which is located on the Brussels-Antwerp axis. These comprise the installation of an auto-unloading zone and the construction of a 2,500 square meter mezzanine floor exclusively dedicated to co-packing activities. With a handling area of 93,000 square meters, a storage capacity of 93,000 pallets and five different temperature zones ranging from - 22°C to +18°C and ambient temperature, DB Schenker offers FMCG customers ideal conditions for the flexible storage of all kinds of goods. “Our capacities enable us to adapt easily to changing volumes,” says Geert Vanderoy, Branch Manager at Schenker nv in Willebroek. “Moreover, our shared truck concept where various products from different producers can be loaded onto one truck helps our customers cut transport costs.”

However, the concept does not only cut costs. It also facilitates more intensive cooperation between customers, retailers and DB Schenker’s logistics experts. “Our goal is integration,“ explains Geert Vanderoy. ”It is unique for all three parties to sit together and figure out new solutions.”

Sofie Hofman, Head of Supply Chain Operations Belgilux at long-term customer Nestlé: “The capacities at the FMCG warehouse in Willebroek give Nestlé the advantage of being able to anticipate the increasing demands for flexibility and availability even better.”

Based in Antwerp, Schenker nv is one of the Belgian market’s leading integrated logistics service providers and employs 680 staff at eight branches: Antwerp, Brussels, Eupen, Mechelen, Zwevegem, Willebroek, Zaventem and Zeebrugge. DB Schenker Logistics supports industry and trade in the global exchange of goods combining Land Transport, Air and Ocean Freight, Contract Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
