DB Schenker offers reliable industry-specific solutions at new Health Care Competence Center in Belgium

Antwerp/Brussels, October 3rd, 2014)
With its new Healthcare Competence Center in Brussels (Steenokkerzeel), DB Schenker is well-positioned to fulfill the special needs of the pharmaceutical and healthcare industry. “Thanks to our years of expertise in healthcare logistics, we have everything in place to offer our customers safe and reliable industry-specific end-to-end solutions,” states Ulrich Pütz, Managing Director of Schenker nv. “This is part of DB Schenker’s Global Quality Framework Program which focuses on the key quality requirements of the Healthcare/Pharmaceutical industry.”

At Brussels airport, with close connections to the global markets, Schenker nv operates one of DB Schenker’s worldwide Healthcare Competence Centers which boasts of a special Pharma Desk for air freight. An industrial pharmacist with in-depth knowledge of the stringent standards is in place to ensure that both the facility and the healthcare logistics services offered comply with the continuously changing regulations applied by consumers, government, wholesalers and distributors. For instance, the DB Schenker Healthcare warehouse at Brussels airport complies with the high quality and security standards of GDP (Good Distribution Practices) and Schenker nv has been granted a license to store pharmaceutical products by the Belgian Ministry of Health (MoH).

“Our goal is to develop supply chain solutions for our customers in order to ensure that time and temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical and healthcare products reach their destinations safely and in time – in Belgium and all over the world,” explains Eddy Raes, Business Unit Director Airfreight of Schenker nv.
“We achieve this with the help of our global network which combines air, ocean, land and rail transport with contract logistics for optimum solutions. This means we are able to react immediately and flexibly to our customers’ distribution needs.” The qualified trained healthcare specialists at Schenker nv in Brussels belong to a dedicated team of more than hundred DB Schenker healthcare experts worldwide who provide assistance on a global scale.

Services include the complete traceability of shipments as well as the proper storage and transport of sensitive goods, e.g. by offering closed cold chain solutions for biological drugs. The Pharma cross dock area in Schenker nv’s Health Care Competence Center has special rooms which are temperaturecontrolled at 2-8 degrees Celsius and at 15-25 degrees Celsius.

DB Schenker Logistics is constantly expanding its range of temperature controlled air freight services. It offers regular cold chain flights sending temperature-sensitive pharmaceutical products directly from Europe to the US. The closed-loop cool chain process guarantees a more reliable transport of pharmaceutical consignments.

Moreover, Schenker nv increases the density of its network of QEP (Quality Envirotainer Provider) accredited locations, Brussels being one of them.

Reefer containers and the DB Schenker Smartbox premium are used for long distance temperature-controlled ocean freight, e.g. for heavy cargoes. Finally, land transports, pick-up and delivery, are made in temperature-controlled trucks.

“In view of the constantly changing environment in the healthcare industry and the fact that legal regulations are becoming stricter, we are constantly deploying all our services and products in all forms of transport in order to develop the best industry-specific solutions,” says Catherine Barbier, Vertical Market Manager Healthcare of Schenker nv.

Based in Antwerp, Schenker nv is one of the Belgian market’s leading integrated logistics service providers and employs 680 staff at eight branches: Antwerp, Brussels, Eupen, Mechelen, Zwevegem, Willebroek, Zaventem and Zeebrugge. DB Schenker Logistics supports industry and trade in the global exchange of goods combining Land Transport, Air and Ocean Freight, Contract Logistics and Supply Chain Management.
